Job Description

The ITS Platform Engineering team is seeking a data center manager to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of the data center in the RSF and the data center at the Flatirons campus as well as supervising the ITS racks and equipment in the ESIF data center. The data center manager is responsible for monitoring and managing power and cooling, keeping the facility clean, working with teams to meet their data center needs, and providing data for data calls. The data center manager should be aware of trends and new technology that could benefit NREL and make recommendations as appropriate.


Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of related experience, Master’s degree, and / or equivalent related experience


Additional Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to obtain an HSPD-12 badge/credential
  • Experience with monitoring and maintaining power systems including UPS and PDU equipment with knowledge of the associated hardware and management software
  • Experience with data center sensors and cameras
  • Understanding of proper disposal procedures for digital media
  • Knowledge of NREL processes for removing and disposing of equipment that is no longer needed
  • Ability to maintain an inventory of relevant parts and equipment to keep the ITS data centers operating at optimal levels
  • Familiarity with balancing data center power and cooling to meet organizational requirements
  • Awareness of cyber security best practices for the data center
  • Awareness of data center best practices and trends in data center technology
  • Ability to manage relationships with site operations personnel needed to keep the ITS data centers operating
  • Ability to work with vendors to obtain the equipment and services necessary to operate the ITS data centers
  • Demonstrated organizational skills when it comes to keeping data center facilities clean and orderly
  • Ability to access systems for recording data needed for DOE data calls
  • Skilled in analytical techniques and practices, and problem solving.
  • Skilled in oral and written communication.
  • Intermediate expertise in software programs and information systems used to manage data center systems
  • General knowledge and application of data center standards, principles, concepts and techniques. Some understanding of related IS practices and standards

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Annual Salary Range: $68,000 - $112,200

Offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position`s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
