Primary Location: Chicago IL
Other Locations: This position can be located within a 50-mile radius of an Anthem office.

The myNEXUS Analytics team is seeking a Data Scientist who is experience, creative, and assertive to lead key projects and develop high value ML and AI applications. The successful candidate will collaborate with key Anthem and myNEXUS stakeholders and develop applications based on a deep knowledge of available healthcare data. This individual will use their leadership and data science skills to support all customers on key projects and decisions. They will lead, take ownership and initiative to recommend and develop data science products that maximize the value myNEXUS provides to Anthem and other clients.

The Data Scientist will be primarily responsible for engaging in statistical analysis and data mining to determine opportunities for more efficient operations. Specifically, this candidate must have the experience/skill set to assist the organization in advancing its machine learning/AI capabilities. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated history of working with various stakeholders in an organization and explaining complex analysis to an audience that is not as familiar with interpreting complex statistical analysis.

Primary duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating advanced analytical and statistical models to support business objectives and create solutions
  • Collecting data through means such as analyzing business results or by setting up and managing new studies
  • Transferring, and manipulating data into a new format to make it more appropriate for analysis
  • Creating new and/or experimental frameworks to collect data
  • Building tools to automate data collection and create new business solutions
  • Searching through large data sets for usable information
  • Creating reports and presentations for business uses
  • Correlating similar data to find actionable results
  • Effectively works across departments to identify business objectives and identify use cases for data analytics to solve business needs
  • Engaging key stakeholders to understand project dependencies and constraints to manage project/implementation plans
  • Deploying predictive models into a production environment
  • Engaging in code review and QA, as well as coaching analytical staff in data science and advanced analytics techniques


Minimum Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, Econometrics, Physics, Biostatistics or related Quantitative disciplines and 3 or more years’ experience in predictive analytics or equivalent. PhD and experience in the healthcare sector preferred.
  • Experience in Data Science practice including data analysis, statistical analysis and application to reporting solutions.
  • Experience in Natural Language Processing.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps.
  • Experience using Azure Data Factor/Machine Learning Services
  • Experience with an ETL tool targeting a relational database engine (MSSQL) or Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services 2005/2008/2012
  • Experience with Microsoft Reporting Services 2005/2008/2012
  • Experience using business intelligence tools; preferably Tableau
  • Experience establishing, using, and maintaining Python, R and/or Scala analysis environments
  • Experience working on the command line (preferably Linux)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Skilled in writing maintainable statistical models and refining existing models
  • Skilled in setting up reliable tests for performance of machine learning models
  • Experience in developing Microsoft SQL Server 2005/2008/2012/2014 solutions and reporting
  • Experience using effective version control (through Git or DevOps)
  • Advanced understanding of Relational and Dimensional modeling
  • Advanced understanding of mathematics (emphasis on statistical analysis used to analyze/manage big data)
  • Negotiation and persuasion skills; ability to facilitate consensus among a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Excellent understanding of coding methods and best practices
  • Review the designs, code, and test plans of other engineers and developers
  • Strong listening skills; ability to capture requirements expressed in design meetings
  • Strong understanding of business needs/objectives
  • Flexible and adaptable in regard to learning and understanding new technologies
  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Mentors team members in technology, architecture and delivery of applications
  • Successful teamwork experience and demonstrated leadership abilities are required
  • Creates a shared sense of direction and community among the teams
  • Time management skills are a must; as well as the ability to be flexible and creative
  • Possesses the cultural attributes of the organization and understands how to work in a small fast paced environment.
  • Demonstrable some Software Development experience
  • Understanding of cloud-based database platforms and the configuration and use of the environment.
  • Knowledge of database architecture and design
  • Ability to interpret written requirements and technical specification documents.
  • Ability to code software according to published standards and design guidelines.
  • Experience in Natural Language Processing.
  • Experience using Azure DevOps.
  • Experience using Azure Data Factor/Machine Learning Services
