Title: Advancing Data Science with SBS: Sensor & Data Science Intern

This internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of research in an industry. The intern will work with Sea-Bird Scientific on a project related to data from bio-geochemical sensors on autonomous ocean platforms. It will involve working closely with the Science team to perform basic data analysis. You will meet regularly with your mentor to coordinate, plan, and help set expectations. You will be asked to present and provide updates a few times at team meetings. Research will involve developing tools to monitor and assess performance of sensors deployed into the field. The desired outcome of this project is to contribute to the advancement of oceanographic biogeochemical observations and an improved understanding of sensor performance. You will be expected to create a final presentation and writeup of the project. The intern will communicate these outcomes to Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) and Sea-Bird Scientific.
Monitor instrument data streams from the field/ocean
Collaborate with Sea-Bird associates to develop code and/or web site tools to record, monitor, analyze, and visualize data from the biogeochemical sensors
Read and document relevant literature and information to learn the basics of ocean instrumentation
Present (via a final report and oral presentation) final observations to Sea-Bird Scientific
Passionate about learning
Interested in learning about marine instrumentation and data analysis, particularly time series of essential ocean variables (e.g., temperature, salinity, chlorophyll fluorescence, turbidity)
Able to work both independently and in a team environment
Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Willing to learn new web and/or networking tools, as needed
Preferred experience: Microsoft Teams, virtual conferencing tools, Excel, Python, Matlab
