SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory seeks an early-career researcher to apply machine learning (ML) to the physical sciences. SLAC is one of the world’s premier research laboratories, with internationally leading capabilities in photon science, accelerator physics, high energy physics (HEP), and energy sciences. Machine learning is expected to play an important role in nearly every major project at SLAC. Applications include deep learning for detector analysis, online control of facilities, surrogate models for high-fidelity simulations, and new modes of data analysis to handle data rates that can reach TBs/second.

The new ML initiative was founded to push the limits of SLAC’s highest impact science.. The role is interdisciplinary and collaborative, and the candidate will work jointly with scientists and engineers at SLAC, academics at Stanford, industrial partners in Silicon Valley, and facility users from around the world. Finally, the candidate should have a creative spark to tackle unsolved problems in science.

Example projects from previous internships:

  • Design anomaly detection methods to predict and recover from particle accelerator faults.
  • Implement Bayesian optimization tools to control and optimize an x-ray laser.
  • Data analysis and prediction of archived historical X-ray laser performance.
  • Training ML surrogate models of an X-ray laser.
  • Analysis of data from LCLS experiments on X-ray interactions with diatomic molecules.
  • Implementation of on-line data analysis algorithms for LCLS experiments.
  • Analysis of publication data to determine scientific productivity of facility.

Opportunities and Benefits:

  • Great resume builder for someone seeking practical experience in a scientific and research environment or considering graduate work in machine learning and the physical sciences.
  • Opportunity to become more closely connected to the Stanford/SLAC scientific community, as the intern will be working with both students and staff from many different disciplines.
  • Opportunity to work in a scientific user facility and world leading accelerator and photon science laboratory.

Note: This is a dual listing for both level II and level II interns. A level III internship positions will have substantial responsibility for determining and coordinating the research project with others. Originality, analysis, and judgment are required to carry out work. The supervisor reviews work when guidance is required.
